On July 4th, 1776
This great nation, the United States of America,
In a struggle for what was right and free,
Was proudly born…
May we celebrate that precious freedom
For which our forbears fought so bravely…
The freedom that is inherent
In the Stars and Stripes, our revered flag…
This 4th of July!
You are listening to
"The Star-Spangled Banner"
This is the national anthem of the United States of America.
The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814
by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key,
after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships
in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.
